Horseshoe Bay A
delightful one hour walk from The Saltings. You will need good walking
shoes. Walk down our drive and turn right and head towards the Sandspit
jetty. A couple of board walks will take you over the mangroves and through
the play ground which is just opposite the caravan camp. Walk through the
camp and up a little hill passing an olive grove and maybe some goats. You
will get a lovely view of Sandspit and the yachts at anchor. Follow the
sign to Horseshoe Bay and after walking about fifteen minutes through the
native bush you will come to the bay where there is a picnic table and
grassy area. If the tide is out you will be able to see the unusual
sandstone boulders and rock pools. You can walk back along the shoreline to
the caravan camp and then back to The Saltings.
Maureen’s
Walk If
you are a keen walker then you could do the two hour hike. Head towards
the caravan camp. Just before the camp turn right up Brick Bay Drive – a
long steep hill. At the top of the hill you will have the reward of a
beautiful panorama view of the Hauraki Gulf. Walk on a little and turn
right. You are still on Brick Bay Drive. At this point you will notice a
blue walkers sign on the left hand side close to the bush. This marks the
beginning of a native bush walk right down to Brick Bay Beach. You can walk
along the beach to the right and enjoy the lovely view. New public toilets
are at the end of the beach. Continue your walk by retracing your steps up
through the native bush track. When you get to the top of the track you
will walk across the road and turn into Kotare Place at the end of which is
a cul de sac. You will see a grassy path flanked on either side by a hedge
directly in front of you. Continue down this until come out to a grassy
clearing. Walk across this and then you have the choice of turning right to
go onto the Horseshoe Bay track as described above or left to go back
through the caravan camp.
Tawharanui A
Beautiful regional park with stunning coastal scenery. It has a great surf
beach and lovely walks. Takes about twenty minutes to get there. Grab your
picnic provisions in Matakana from the Patisserie or the Black Dog café and
spend the day there.
