Saltings Estate is a small boutique family owned vineyard which produces classical style wines that express the qualities of our terroir; that is our soils, microclimate, biodynamic management and care of the vineyard.
In 2003 Maureen and I established the vineyard on our eight acre property on the banks of the Sandspit Estuary, just north of Warkworth in the Matakana wine growing area.
Our hand-picked grapes are grown on warm, clay/loam north-facing slopes where temperatures are moderated by coastal breezes. Our driving force is to create premium wines by developing vital living soil and healthy vines. Using natural methods and Biodynamic principles we endeavour to enhance the life quality of our land and, in doing so not only aim to grow grapes of exceptional flavour and colour, but also nurture and improve our land for future generations.
Our vineyard of three and a half acres is planted with Syrah, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc grapes. Manual shoot and fruit thinning, leaf-plucking and harvesting is standard practice to ensure consistently low yields and better fruit quality. A natural balance is achieved on the property with plantings of olive and fruit trees, native bush and exotic plants and trees.
We are totally committed to making the best wine, the wine of tomorrow - a wine that will truly reflect the area it was grown in, uncontaminated and allowed to express its unique originality
